Microlearning as the name suggest is  the new way of presenting the learning content in short nuggets or short bursts i.e. duration of about three to ten minutes to meet specific focussed objectives or learning outcomes.

As these bite-sized courses are easy to develop and apply in the workplace, they are becoming one of the most sought-after learning solutions in the workplace. One more distinct advantage of microlearning is its ability to keep up with the business priorities even if they are changing quite frequently.  One such case in point is the new GDPR regulations which are likely to be implemented from May 2018 in EU requires quick compliance training for all the employees and can be easily achieved through microlearning.

However, an important consideration while choosing and designing microlearning is to understand what the learners want from these delivery methods. Are they looking at quick reference guides in their daily workflow or are they looking for just in time information? Deliberating on all these considerations can be an important part of implementing a successful micro learning strategy in your organization.

In this blog we have tried to take a learner’s perspective as to what they expect from a microlearning  training or a course:

1) Concise

Learners want the training content to be divided into shorter learning nuggets of about 3 to 5 minutes duration so that they could consume it during their break time while commuting and when it is required.

2) Learner-Centric

Learners want the power to customize and personalize their learning paths and it can be done with the help of interactive microlearning by giving the learners the power to choose their learning path as per their learning styles.

3) Accessibility

Modern learners nowadays carry a  variety of devices like tablets, smartphones, IPADs and even flexible laptops. So learners want the freedom to access the module across multiple devices support anytime, anywhere learning.

4) Engagement

By adding interactive elements such as hotspots, button click, drag and drop, fill in the blanks and assessments helps learners to break the passivity of the microlearning and in turn, gives them a feedback about their performance.

5) Storytelling

Learners love to listen to well scripted and narrated stories in microlearning. Whether it is a character narrating his story (first person) or a narrator telling a story, storytelling is what learners will look forward to from a microlearning course.

6) Real world examples

Learners will relate and learn the content more if they can relate to their work experiences. So you can use real-life scenarios, experiences and examples to show the learners about a particular topic or a subject so that learner can relate to the subject well and helps in better .retention.

7) Narrations

Adding narrations to the microlearning video helps to reinforce the learning especially if they didn’t understand or missed out on the audio narration.

So are your learners expecting anything else from micro learning.  Please feel free to share your comments.
