A gondola ride in Venice,  a tandem skydive from fifteen thousand feet or a recently watched horror movie are all experiences which we will love to talk and share with our friends, family and of course on social media.  So what if we get to relive these experiences, will it not be fantastic? 360-degrees videos are just doing that.

According to Wikipedia, “360-degrees videos, also known as immersive videos or spherical videos, are video recordings where a view in every direction is recorded at the same time, shot using an omnidirectional camera or collection of cameras. During playback, the viewer has the control of the viewing direction like a panorama”.

360-degrees videos can be played on a computer, laptop, tablets and even on mobile phones. By using various devices such as Google Cardboard you can create a 360-degrees viewing experience for the learners.Needless to say, that for you to implement 360-degrees videos as a part of your learning strategy the first prerequisite is the device such as Google VR or any other VR supporting device.

Now let’s understand the some of the ways in which 360-degrees videos can be used or applied in e-learning

1.Virtual Walk throughs

This is one of my favorite features of the 360-degrees videos and practically the best application in e-learning. They help you to have a complete walk through in a virtual environment where the learner can completely feel the surroundings and feel himself in the environment.

For example:  You can give a 360-degreesviewing experience and show the complete walk through of the entire office for the new joiner. who is about to join the organization or a complete walk through of the factory and how the production happens in it.

2.Immersive Compliance Training Experience

When it comes to certain compliance training, which involves action and participation from the learners, 360-degrees videos can be a good option. With the help of 360-degrees videos, you can make the training more involved and relatable.

For example: You can virtually create a factory scenario showing an incident and explaining to the employees as to how to handle the safety incident. This gives a very realistic approach to the compliance training. Similarly, usage of 360-degrees videos for unsafe sites, hazardous material handling, working from heights etc can be very beneficial both from retention, recall, and application of learning.

3. Product Training

Just imagine the learners undergoing the product training through the use of 360-degrees videos. The learners can view the in-depth features and usage of the product in a virtual environment. This can help them better remember the features and they are in a better position to present those features to a prospective customer and close the sale.

For example: salespeople of a company manufacturing vacuum cleaners or dishwashers etc can be given product training through 360 degrees videos and they can better retain and apply such training. Similar training on how to use a mascara or how to apply foundation or similar beauty products can better demonstrate the product application and give the learners a complete feel of the product.

4.Fascinating videos for specific situations

Online training videos allow the employees to absorb the content better, however, with the help of 360-degrees videos, you can take them a step further by immersing them into a fantasy world.

For example:  if your online video is to help your learners know about underwater life, a 360 degrees video can be the right choice as no amount of imagery can help the learners understand what it feels like underwater. It reduces the passive watching process and breaks the monotony by empowering the learners to actively engage with the environment.

5.Case Studies

We all know that case studies help the learners to connect with the real-life examples and they usually present solutions to a particular problem. Thus case studies educate the learners in finding the solution to a particular issue. Just imagine if you can create a 360- degrees case study video, it will completely immerse the learners in the virtual environment thus making them walk through the entire case as if they are finding the solution to tackle the problem. It will be like learners recreating the emotions that are tied to a particular challenge.

360-degree videos can have a wide variety of applications in learning.  While sky’s the limit for the imagination and creating 360 degrees learning video experiences, start small and always take professional help while doing it the first time.
