Design is one of the most important drivers of user engagement and with the advancement in technology, the traditional elearning is seeing the shift to mobile learning (mlearning) i.e the use of mobile devices like smartphones, tablets, Ipads etc as a medium for learning.

While studies shows that mobile learning is slowly penetrating across several domains and industries, mobile learning design styles are constantly evolving. Designers are ‘on the run’ to hone their skills and create some amazing and unique mobile learning design, which are suitable for various mobile devices.

Hence in this blog, I have curated the top seven mobile learning design trends, which can be aptly used for mobile learning.

1.Overlapping effects

The first trend on my list is overlapping effects where the different elements such as graphics, fonts, and colors overlap to make the design a very vibrant and eye catching one.

Designers now experiment with several color combinations, shadows, and quality images to make the perfect blend of overlapping effects.

Overlapping design is used in mobile learning design too while you design home pages or login screens of the learning module, and the different icons like the start, home and next button etc can be placed in an overlapping fashion.

2.Minimalistic user interface

Minimalistic design – This design is not unknown to the designer community as it is in existence from the past many years.
But recently the minimalistic design interface is gaining wide popularity. A design is called a minimalist design if it is clear, concise and consistent when used.A minimalistic design has the power to pull the attention of the learners on specific areas.

In mobile learning design also the minimalistic design approach can be used in places where you want  to represent the brand image, logo and slogan etc or while you design navigation of the module. With the different screen sizes of the mobile devices and owing to its, minimalistic nature, the e-learning content can be placed in a very neat and clear manner.

3. Blend of opacity and transparency:

You might have noticed this trend in several websites and apps. Designers tend to experiment with opacity and transparency to give effects like clear, blurry, warped dark, light etc. A transparent design brings calmness to the viewers’ eyes and opacity is very good to give a contrasting effect and both of these are again wonderful trends to watch out for.

In mobile learning design, both these design trends can be used to bring focus onto important elements like an important on screen text or some user input field etc.

4.Voice-activated interfaces

Voice activated interface is also one of the rising trends. The present mobile devices are already equipped with voice assistants like Siri, Bixby and there are several other products in the market like Amazon Echo and Google Home etc which recognizes your voice to perform various actions.
Voice activated interfaces have a lot of applications in e-learning specially to seek answers to some common and important questions in any e-learning.

These voice activated interfaces can be used in mobile learning design as well.

5.Adding animations to the design

Another uptrend is the use of small animation clips in e-learning. Adding animation effects to fonts, icons, images, and buttons of a mobile application interface makes it more interactive and gives users an improved experience to the user.

In mlearning too, the animations are a welcome element to bring engagement among the users and increase the visual appeal. Even animation of a brand logo can give a catchy effect on the screen.

6. Personalisation of learning with geo tagging

Personalisation of learning is seen as the next major thing in mobile learning. With machine learning and advanced capabilities, the users learning habit can be studied. This type of design is now very common in the learning mobile app like Udemy etc which shows you course recommendations etc.

With modern authoring tools like Adobe Captivate 8 offering features of ‘geolocation’, the developer is able to build a content that is unique and different for learners based on their location. With the mobile apps, the users’ location can be easily identified and the contents can be further customized and delivered to the users in different locations.

7.Borderless display

Bezel-less display or infinity screen etc. are the next trends or technological advancements in the mobile smartphone market. The graphical designers have already taken the inspiration from this to design several apps and contents to suit the new display style.
The display looks neat without any borders and in mobile learning design, these can be very effectively used for showing various multimedia elements like images and videos.

As a mobile learning designer, you are always required to stay innovative and creative all the time, grasp learners needs constantly and combines the new and existing trends to bring out the best designs for mobile learning.  So what are your views on the upcoming design trends in mobile learning? We would love to hear them!
