I recently renewed my bike’s insurance and I had a very pleasant experience, which I will like to share with my readers. I was greeted by a young executive, who had a tab in his hand and he swiped the screens and explained me the various features of the policies. He seemed quite well versed with the product features and I was rather impressed. I was curious to know as to how could he recall all the product features so coherently and he answered with a smile “Well sir we are having a mobile learning module on the different products and how to sell them. Every time I go for a client meeting, I refresh my learning with the help of the mobile learning modules.”
That really got me thinking as to how m-learning is redefining the way we learn. So which all areas can mobile learning be used for? Let us see in this blog the various examples of mobile learning uses .
1. Improving Sales Team Performance
The first example where mobile learning is used is for enhancing sales effectiveness. High performance sales team is a must for every organisation. but the present day organisations are facing various challenges like a larger and global distributed workforce, and with sales force spending more time on the field, it becomes impossible to train them at one go. Hence the organisations are exploring the options of mobile learning.
For example: Vodafone one of the telecommunications giant created a app called Mobile first which helped to train their entire retail staff in UK. As the staff were facing issues while addressing to customers queries and were finding difficult to cross sell their products and remembering the plans of the carrier. With the help of Mobile learning app the staff were able to learn the content on the go, developers could convert the classroom training content to microlearning modules, which helped in preventing cognitive overload. Thus they could see a jump in 50% in sales, 78% in customers satisfaction and helped them in going eco friendly as they also saved more than $ 70,000 by cutting the paper and stationary cost.
2. Product training
Another example where mobile learning is used is Product Training, that helps the employees to remember about the features, importance and benefits of the particular product and helps in conveying information to the user.
By using mobile learning you can easily train the staff regarding the new features, updates, changes in product portfolio and M-Learning helps the staff to present the unique features of the product in a beautiful manner to the client by using Short Videos / infographics / Apps.
For Example : Pfizer used Mobile learning in order to deliver the training content across its entire sales force, they named the app as ROKET (Return on Knowledge Transfer) where in they used short videos, infographics, PDFs with game mechanics in order to build engaging Product training content to the user thus helping the staff to remember about the product well.
3. Specific training requirements
Mobile learning can be used to train your employees on specific training requirements such as customer service, inventory management, consulting or recommending about a particular service or a product for a user.
For example : Makemytrip which is a leading travel portal used Gamified mobile app to teach the staff to make correct suggestions and activities in foreign location. With the help of app they created scenarios which helped the learner to experience the foreign location by accessing the modules from the office. The organization motivated the employees by giving them points which the user can redeem later for packages and gifts.
4. Compliance Training
The next example where mobile learning is used is compliance training. We all know that compliance training is mandatory and most of the employees won’t enjoy compliance training as they find it lengthy and boring. Employees sometimes might undertake a lengthy classroom training session or find an e-learning module that can be accessed only from the Desktop.
By developing Mobile learning apps it helps the learner to learn on the go and to learn the content in tiny bits thus reducing cognitive overload.
For Example: Kotak Bank used handy train as a mobile learning platform to train the employees on Compliance topics such as KYC and Anti Money Laundering. They divided the entire training content into microlearning modules and they included short animated videos and documents to support the learning process.
5. Customer Education
Mobile app can also be used to educate the user on general facts and awareness.Organizations are also using mobile apps to educate the customer regarding general facts and information to the user.
For example: As we all know that Fitbit is one of the popular fitness application in the market and it is used to track the physical activity of the user and keeps a track of running, calories burnt, user’s heartbeat, sleep. At the same the app promotes and educates the customer of a healthy lifestyle by recommending particular diet plans and workout feature.
